Note: This was supposed to be published in the November issue of The SPARC, the Boston Amateur Radio Club newsletter, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, it was never published, so here it is for the first time in print!
While the communication staff was made up of entirely of hams, the event did not use amateur radio for its operation as obviously, while there are hams in Scouting, not everyone is a ham and therefore, commercial band radio was a must for the event. Using radios provided by DC Rentals (who seem to provide the commercial radios for practically every large event in Boston) MassJam got underway. Net control was a 24/7 operation with shifts scheduled in blocks and food for the net controllers was cooked on site. Despite some hiccups, the event itself was mostly successful, including exodus from the campground was went really well and finished practically on schedule.
All in all, a good month of public service. I recommend the Regatta as a good place to start if you’re interested in the public service side of this great hobby. Now to look forward to next year’s public service season with the Boston Marathon!
The Most Hackable Handheld Ham Radio YetThe [Quansheng] UV-K5, released last year, might be the most hackable handheld ever, with a small army of dedicated hams adding a raft of software-based improvements and new features. I had to have one, and $30 later, I did.
Like Baofeng’s 5R, Quansheng’s K5 as a radio transceiver is fine. (I’m using K5 here to refer to both the original K5 and the new K5(8) model.) The key technical distinction between the 5R and K5 is a seemingly minor design choice. With Baofeng’s 5R, the firmware resides in read-only memory. But Quansheng stores the K5’s firmware in flash memory and made it possible to rewrite that memory with the same USB programming cable used to assign frequencies to preset channels.
CASPIAN, MI – The Iron County Historical & Museum Society (ICHMS) will have two new exhibits this summer thanks to a collaboration with the Iron Range Amateur Radio Club (IRARC) and a grant from the Crystal Falls/Dickinson Area Community Foundation. “We couldn’t be any more excited about this collaboration and the exhibits that will come from it”, states museum director Kathlene Long. The club members are in here helping build the exhibits and are bringing their expertise along with their own artifacts to build these exhibits in time for this coming summer season.
The Club is building a working ham radio station in the museum. It will be fully functional. Museum visitors will be able to see the exhibit and signs will help visitors understand the importance ham radios – and amateur operators – have played in our county’s, and our country’s history. They will also learn why they continue to be so important. In addition, the Club is recreating a display of a vintage WIKB studio from pieces they have collected over the years. All of this is being paid for, in part, from a $500 grant from the Crystal Falls/Dickinson Area Community Foundation. “All in all, this is a lot of moving parts finally coming together to make this happen.” Long explains.
METROPOLIS, IL — Boy Scouts talked to amateur radio operators as far away as Puerto Rico and Arizona during a radio merit badge class hosted by the Southernmost Illinois Emergency Radio Association (SIERA). Five scouts from Troop 2007, out of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Paducah, attended the class on Saturday, March 23, at Trinity Church in Metropolis.
Scouts experimented with tuning forks and a wave generator and had the opportunity to talk on both handy-talkie and high-frequency base radios during the class. They also learned about the science and mechanics of radio as well as important safety measures.
PA25SDV/J JOTA JOTI 2023
Het was weer een geslaagde Jamboree On The Air – JOTA JOTI 2023 bij Scouting De Verbinding in Lemelerveld, het jaarlijkse scoutingevenement dat wereldwijd wordt gehouden. Draaiend samen met Dion PE1ORG, Marc PD5ST en Hugh PC1H onder de call PA25SDV/J hebben we ook dit jaar weer vele leuke verbindingen gemaakt met andere scoutinggroepen in Nederland en over de hele wereld in FM/SSB. We hebben zelfs contact gehad met China!
De aanloop…..
Tijdens de aanloop naar dit weekend werd het wel erg spannend door de verwachtte regen en vooral de harde wind. Speciaal voor het 25 jarige bestaan van Scouting De Verbinding heeft Dion PE1ORG een speciale callsign PA25SDV/J aangevraagd en is er een mobiele antennemast geregeld via Hilco PD2HIZ die de antennes op maximaal 40 meter hoogte kan brengen. Uiteindelijk hebben we besloten om het geheel niet hoger te maken dan 30 meter. Volgens de drone is het 28 meter geworden. Helemaal prima! En het stond ook super stabiel. ook de HF antenne hing lekker hoog.
Opbouwen in de regen
De opbouw verliep soepel en goed. Veel handjes die hebben geholpen. Alleen…. de regen maakte het niet heel leuk. Wat een water en wind. Maar wat een mooie mast 😉
Vossen zoeken en zenden voor Bevers, Welpen en Scouts
Zaterdag was het weer een stukje beter, alleen ’s ochtends wat regen. Overdag het roulatieprogramma met diverse onderdelen waaronder zenden op 2 meter (leggen van contacten met andere scoutinggroepen), chatten en de vossenjacht op zaterdagochtend en -middag voor de bevers, welpen en scouts. Het eerste deel van de zaterdag was de opkomst voor de bevers en welpen die gingen zenden en vossenjagen bij het sportveld. Voor de scouts hadden we een paar vosjes langs een route rondom het bosje geplaatst met 2 meter en 80 meter vosjes. Op vrijdag- en zaterdagavond contacten leggen en het traditioneel ‘galgje’-spelen met andere groepen door de roverscouts, stam leiding en wie zin had. Dit was weer super leuk en gezellig, ondanks dat de opkomst dit jaar wat tegenviel.
Horizontaal of verticaal?
Wij als zendamateurs hebben nu alweer zin in volgend jaar! Dat zeker. Wel zou het heel fijn zijn dat er weer meer JOTA stations actief zijn met horizontale richtantennes. Nu is het grotendeel, in ieder geval in onze regio, voornamelijk actief met een simpele rondstraler en dat maakt de reikwijdte een stuk kleiner. Ook zend je alle kanten op waardoor je erg veel last van elkaar kunt hebben omdat je niet even een ander signaal weg kunt draaien. Horizontaal gepolariseerd heeft zoveel meer voordelen. Ook kun je dan meer groepen bereiken, omdat je bereik veel groter wordt. En ja, het is wat lastiger en wat meer werk. Tot slot
Heel fijn dat we samen met de scoutinggroep bezig kunnen zijn met onze radiozendamateur hobby. Ondanks de wat tegenvallende ‘prestaties’ op 2 meter was het een super geslaagd weekend, mede door de gastvrijheid en goede organisatie door de scoutinggroep De Verbinding in Lemelerveld. Op HF waren gelukkig wel prima condities dus daar konden we wel ‘over de hele wereld’ contacten leggen.
