We travel to far northwest Wisconsin, spending Labor Day weekend at Amnicon Falls State Park (POTA K-1436). Unfortunately a heat wave gripping the midwest follows us north. Will we escape the heat, or will Lake Superior fail to cool us down.
Amnicon Falls State Park, near Superior Wisconsin features a geologic anomaly called the Douglass Fault. More than 500 million years ago, ancient basalts pushed upwards and broke through the younger sandstone, creating a rift. It is most pronounced at this point along the Amnicon river where you see the black volcanic rock above the falls and brown sandstone below it.

This weekend I meet up with Dave, KZ9V, at Lake Wissota State Park, WI (POTA K-1460) for a joint Parks on the Air activation. Daveβs got something up his sleeve this time, so who knows whatβs gonna happen.
Lake Wissota State Park is located in Western Wisconsin near Chippewa Falls. After the area was logged out, the Chippewa river was dammed to create the lake. The marginal glacial sand region was poor farming and in 1961 a 1000 acre state park was created. Full of new growth pines and hardwoods itβs now a year round recreation destination.

Weβre in Southwestern Wisconsin, enjoying the sites of the Driftless Area and putting two parks on the air. Join me for Parks on the Air activations of Tower Hill State Park (POTA K-1478) and Governor Dodge State Park (POTA K-1451).
Southwestern Wisconsinβs driftless area is known for its ancient geological landscape. Sandstone bluffs and deep river valleys carved over eons. The glaciers left this area generally untouched and these cambrian era rocks hold the secrets of time. Mining was an important industry in the region, drawing immigrants to the new territory. Tower Hill State Park encompasses the boom and bust of those lead mining days.
