Welcome to my amateur radio BLOG. Here at N1CLC.com (aka HamNinja.com), I hope to cover my exploration of ham radio, summits on the air (SOTA) and general RF geek stuff.Β  My other BLOGS focus on technology (cloudrant.com), photography (cameraninja.com/blog), and life (thethroboflife.com). QSL via QRZ, LOTW, cards.

Live in San Diego close to the top of a hill so I have the luxury of access toΒ just about any repeater in the county.

I find that I enjoy SOTA operations more than playing with my 7300.Β  I use a FT-817ND for SOTA opperations, but there are days I wish I had more power given the conditions and people don't want to wait so I use a FT891 (see my full loadout here).Β  Β While doingΒ SOTA, you'll find me scanning 146.520 and DMR SOTA (973) and I normally turn on my Inreach tracking so you can watchΒ hereΒ for better arrival times.Β  At my QTH AO, you canΒ find me on DMR San Diego Hangout (310014), orΒ SoCal Talk Group (31066).

My first successful SOTA opp was off a small mountain by my houseΒ and I was able to conduct a QSO with a dude inΒ Japan via SSB phone at 5 watts.Β  That wasΒ a kick.Β Β I'm still struggling at this hobby, trying to figure out what antenna works the best.Β  At home, I'm happy to keep my max at 100 watts, but my end-fed antenna has me a tadd baffled.Β  I do like to keeping it stealth, so having it on a pole that I can extend up and then put awayΒ is awesome.

Update Your Names DB for Outd

24 December 2020 at 20:31

As you may know, I’ve switched to Outd for logging contacts on my iPhone for SOTA operations.Β  I wrote a review of Outd HERE.Β  One thing that it won’t do it pull callsigns from QRZ.com.Β  In addition, if the callsign changed hands, the name will be wrong.Β  What I decided to do is create an updated file with callsigns that I’ve worked for SOTA that are not in the DB and sometimes fix the names that are in there if I know they are bad.Β  I’ve added about a 1,000 calls so far that are not in the stock version.Β  I was hoping to get a dump of calls that are in the SOTA DB but that might not be permissible.Β

Β

If you use Outd and would like to use my file, go HERE for instructions on how to install the latest version.Β  If you have calls that you would like to add or repair, feel free to send me a list with the callsign and name separated with a comma (β€œ,”).Β  Also, if you have any issues, please let me know right away.
